For the love of Music
June 30th, 2010My love for music also extends to the musicians playing it and I find my job particularly fulfilling when I can catch a musician in his/her element. Fortunately, I have many opportunities to do this, since my best friend Sandhya Sanjana is a fantastic musician. These images are in honour of her new CD, Random Access Melody , for which she asked me to shoot some promotional pictures and I was most happy to do so! The band members were a delight to shoot. They exuded ease and gave me free reign of the shoot and allowed me to experiment freely. It’s not often that I am allowed to do that and have an inspirational subject at the same time.
So, here are the results of a rather liberating session.
Mijn liefde voor de muziek strekt zich ook uit naar de muziekanten die het spelen en mijn werk geeft mij extra voldoening wanneer ik een muzikant in zijn/haar element kan vastleggen. Gelukkig heb ik vele mogelijkheden om dit te doen, aangezien mij beste vriendin Sandhya Sanjana een fantastische muzikant is. Deze afbeeldingen zijn ter ere van haar nieuwe CD Random Access Melody, waarvoor ze me gevraagd heeft een paar promotiefoto’s te maken en ik was meer dan bereid om dit te doen! De bandleden waren fantastisch om te fotograferen. Ze straalden rust uit en gaven mij de vrije hand in de sessie en stonden mij toe om vrijelijk te experimenteren. Het gebeurd niet vaak dat ik dat mag doen en tegelijkertijd een inspirerend onderwerp heb.
Dus, hier is het resultaat van een redelijk bevrijdende sessie.

Family Ties…
June 18th, 2010My last assignment was with a lovely family. M-the brunette is my new babysitter and she has seen my work at home and recommended me to her mom.
I’ve known M’s mom for a while so it was a delight to be able to do their family portraits!

Mijn laatste opdracht was bij een hele leuke familie. M- Het meisje met het bruine haar is mijn nieuwe oppas en zij heeft mijn werk gezien bij mij thuis en mij aanbevolen bij haar moeder. Ik ken M’s moeder al een tijdje dus het was verrukkelijk om hun familie portretten to mogen doen!
Dank jullie wel voor een leuke middag! Jullie waren allemaal helemaal fantastisch!

Celebrating life…
June 9th, 2010It’s hard to celebrate something if there hasn’t been a battle preceding it. We celebrate birthdays and anniversaries, but how many of us actually celebrate life?
I had the good fortune to observe one such celebration, commemorating the victory of some very brave women over the Cancer and some who were still courageously fighting it. On this day these lovely women took a break from their struggles to simply indulge. There was a plethora of delights organised. The ladies got a neck massage from Anneke Bruijstens, colour advice from Yvonne Stoevelaar , gifts from Gerda Brouwer de Koning of Apotheek Nueman and Van Dijk Bakery , a yoga lesson by Marian van Schoneveld from Yoga-U and last but not least a memory of the day in a picture, taken by me.
This day inspired me so greatly. I started the day tired and totally lacklustre but in the company of women brimming with hope and determination it was hard to stay that way for too long. These ladies were beautiful subjects, they radiated beauty and warmth and each line on their face, each wrinkle told a story – a struggle. So much so, that I almost felt guilty post-processing! Hence, I decided to leave the lines I would normally take out, the wrinkles I would normally cover, as an ode to their battles fought and won and celebrate the hard earned beauty of their live.
Het is moeilijk om iets te vieren als er geen strijd aan vooraf is gegaan. We vieren verjaardagen en trouwdagen, maar hoeveel van ons vieren eigenlijk het leven?
Ik had het geluk om zo’n viering bij te wonen, ter ere van een aantal dappere vrouwen die kanker hebben overwonnen of nog steeds dapper bestrijden. Op deze dag namen deze fantastische vrouwen even een pauze van hun strijd om zich simpelweg te laten verwennen. Er was een scala een verwennerijen georganiseerd. De dames kregen een nekmassage van Anneke Bruijstens, kleuradvies van Yvonne Stoevelaar, cadeautjes van Gerda Brouwer de Koning of Apotheek Nueman en Bakkerij Van Dijk, een yoga les van Marian van Schoneveld van Yoga-U en tot slot een herinnering aan deze dag in de vorm van een foto, genomen door mij.
Deze dag heeft mij zo enorm geïnspireerd. Ik begon moe en volledig lusteloos aan de dag, maar in het gezelschap van deze vrouwen de stralen van hoop en vastberadenheid was het moeilijk om lang zo te blijven voelen. Deze dames waren schitterende modellen. Ze straalden schoonheid en warmte uit en elke lijn op hun gezicht, elke rimpel een verhaal – een strijd. Zoveel zelfs dat ik me bijna schuldig voelde om de foto’s na te bewerken! Daarom heb ik besloten om de lijnen die ik normaal gesproken weg zou halen, de rimpels die ik normaal gesproken zou bedekken te laten zoals ze zijn. Als een ode aan hun gestreden strijd en hun overwinning en om de zwaarbevochten schoonheid van het leven te vieren.

Ik was gisteren al een keertje komen kijken maar kon moeilijk de juiste woorden vinden voor deze prachtige reportage.
Uiteindelijk gaat het om twee ontzettend sterke zaken en dat is het verhaal en de sprekende foto’s.
Het is ontzettend fijn om naar te kijken, je hebt zeer mooie expressies weten vast te leggen!

The truth about fairy tale weddings…
June 3rd, 2010The, beautiful wedding, the gorgeous bride – every woman’s dream. I’ve always felt that these things are just the icing on the cake of a beautiful relationship and sometimes they are mistaken for being the cake!
Last month Tineke and I were fortunate to be the official photographers for a wedding with both the cake and the icing. The couple featured in the pictures below symbolised, to me, the epitome of a loving relationship, and their wedding was a reflection of this. They spared no effort to proclaim their love for each other. They entered the world of marital bliss drawn by a carriage and horses and horsemen in grand attire. Although the entire affair was grand, it somehow did not take away or overshadow the couple’s obvious love for one another. After the beautiful ceremony we sailed around Gouda in beautifully decorated boats and drank to the couple’s health. The reception too exuded love and warmth.
The couple were a delight to work with and treated us like part of the family on and before the wedding too. For me, true love is when there is enough to share with other people. That to me is a true fairy tale wedding.
De prachtige bruiloft, een wonderschone bruid – de droom van elke vrouw. Ik heb altijd geloofd dat deze dingen alleen de krenten in de pap van een fantastische relatie zijn maar soms worden verward met de pap zelf!
Vorige maand waren Tineke en ik zo gelukkig dat we de officiële fotografen waren van een bruiloft met zowel de krenten als de pap. Het koppel dat staat afgebeeld in de foto’s hieronder stonden, wat mij betreft, symbool voor de ultieme liefdesrelatie, en hun bruiloft was een reflectie hiervan. Ze spaarden kosten nog moeite om hun liefte voor elkaar te uiten. Ze betraden de wereld van een gelukzalige trouwerij getrokken door koetsen en paarden en volledig uitgedoste koetsiers. Hoewel de hele gebeurtenis groots was, overschaduwde het op de een of andere manier toch niet de overduidelijke liefde van het bruiloftskoppel voor elkaar. Na een schitterende ceremonie voeren we door Gouda in prachtig versierde boten en toosten op het geluk van het koppel. De receptie straalde ook liefde en warmte uit. Het koppel van fantastisch om mee te werken en ze behandelden ons als deel van hun familie tijdens de bruiloft en ook daarvoor. Voor mij bestaat echte liefde uit het hebben van genoeg om te delen met anderen. Dat is voor mij een echte sprookjesbruiloft.

May 28th, 2010Have a look at the Zazou’s website and it says love and play. A perfect summary of my next Crave Amsterdam shoot: lovely and playful. After a huge mug of traditionally brewed dutch coffee (delish by the way!) we went on to shoot modern, Dutch Design kids’ clothes and accessories. One idea led to another and Lonneke, the inspiring owner of Zazou kids fashion spontaneously hopped into her “bakfiets” (transporter bicycle) earning her the glorious title of “Bakfietsmama.”
Lonneke, it was truly a pleasure to meet you. Thank you for a lovely morning.
Neem een kijkje neemt op de website van Zazou en je ziet “love” en “play”. Een perfecte samenvatting van mijn volgende fotosessie voor Crave Amsterdam: leuk en speels. Na een grote mok traditioneel gebrouwen Nederlandse koffie (heerlijk overigens!) gingen we aan de slag voor een sessie van moderne Dutch Design kinderkleden en accessoires. De ene bak (koffie) leidde tot de andere bak (op de fiets) en Lonneke (de inspirerende eigenaar van Zazou kindermode) sprong spontaan in haar bakfiets, hetgeen haar de glorieuze titel van bakfietsmama opleverde.
Lonneke het was absoluut een genoegen om je te ontmoeten. Bedankt voor een geweldige ochtend.

Crave
May 11th, 2010It’s still is a man’s world, despite what nay-sayers may say. Which is why I think that Crave Amsterdam is an extremely far-sighted vision. It’s a one stop directory of the innovative women entrepreneurs, in a given city, who have and are in the midst of developing a business.
My part in this vision is that I have the brilliant opportunity to photograph some of these inspiring ladies and their wares for the book and also feature in the book!
The first shoot I had was for a business Kwartetcadeau, which deals in a game that I didn’t even know about. Whether this is a sign of its innovativeness of or my ignorance, I don’t really want to delve too deeply into. Nonetheless, after a chat with my husband I realised that “kwartetten” is a card game that is available in toy stores all around. But, Marcia’s cards are special. You can print any images on your cards and make your own game!
The shoot provided a perfect opportunity for us to swap our start-up trials and tribulations. I’m really delighted to have met Marcia and if anyone is on the lookout for an original gift…
Het is nog steeds een mannenwereld, wat de tegenstanders ook zeggen. Dat is waarom ik denk dat Crave Amsterdam zo’n geweldige vooruitziende visie heeft. Het is een compleet overzicht van de innovatieve vrouwelijke ondernemers in een bepaalde stad, die middenin de ontwikkeling zitten van hun bedrijf of dit al hebben gedaan. Mijn aandeel in deze visie is dat ik de briljante kans heb gekregen om enkele van deze inspirerende dames en hun goederen te fotograferen voor het boek en zelf ook in het boek zal worden opgenomen.
De eerste sessie dit ik had was voor een bedrijf Kwartetcadeau, dat handelt in een spel dat ik niet eens kende. Of dit nu een teken is van innovatie of van mijn onwetendheid, daar wil ik liever niet te diep op ingaan. Maar goed, na een gesprek met mijn man realiseerde ik me dat kwartetten een kaartspel is dat overal in winkels verkrijgbaar is. Maar Marcia’s kaarten zijn bijzonder. Je kunt elke afbeelding op de kaarten laten afdrukken en je eigen spel maken.
De sessie bood de perfecte kans voor ons om onze opstartproblemen te delen. Ik ben heel blij dat ik Marcia heb ontmoet, en als iemand nog op zoek is naar een origineel cadeau….

Love is in the air…
May 3rd, 2010Natalie and I thoroughly enjoyed our evening with the winners of the Helping Haiti initiative! We spent the evening walking through the couple’s favourite streets of Holland whilst listening to anecdotes of their lives together.
We had so many favourites to choose from!
Thank you once again for helping us help the victims of Haiti’s earthquake.
Natalie en ik hebben een hele leuke avond gehad met de winnaars van het Helping Haiti initiatief. We hebben de avond doorgebracht door met het koppel door hun favoriete straten van Holland te lopen, terwijl we luisterden naar de anekdotes van hun leven samen. We hadden zoveel favorieten om tussen te kiezen.! Nogmaals hartelijk bedankt dat jullie ons hebben geholpen om de slachtoffers van Haiti’s aardbeving te helpen.
